Multiple Calls During High Winds
Mon. Feb 25th 2019

During a period when Newtown was under National Weather Service High Wind Warning, SHVFR responded to six calls for wires down on Monday, February 25.

The first was to Zoar Road, at 12:14, after a resident contacted dispatch to report a branch had fallen and taken the primary lines with it, blocking the road in front of his home. In addition, the power line was pulled from the side of an outbuilding and there was arcing from the utility box on the side of the building.

Brush 445 and Engine 441 both responded. Chief Halstead had command of the scene.

Firefighters closed the road to through traffic; all residences still had access from either side of the downed lines. Eversource was notified.

The breakers were turned off at the scene, and thermal imagers were used to check for fire hazards.

Sandy Hook returned to service at 12:53.

Additional calls for wires down were recorded on Riverside Road (two different locations), Shepaug Road, Old Green Road, and Old Mill near Berkshire Road. Sandy Hook had five additional calls on Monday, for a total of 11 be the end of the day.
