Single Motor Vehicle Accident Sends One To Hospital, Closes Busy Road
Sun. Feb 16th 2020

Sandy Hook VFR, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a paramedic all responded to 98 Berkshire Road at 12:08 Sunday afternoon for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries. First responders were told that a vehicle had gone off the roadway and the male driver was unconscious.

An RN on the scene reported to dispatch that she was unable to find a pulse of the driver, a 73-year-old male. A police officer on the scene then reported the driver was unconscious, but had a pulse.

Rescue 444 and Engine 442 responded to the scene with crews. Chief Halstead took command upon arrival.

The vehicle, a 2002 Cadillac DeVille, had been traveling east on Berkshire Road/Route 34, but continued straight on a curve. The vehicle crashed into a stone wall before stopping.

Firefighters assisted NVAC with medical care. The driver was transported to a hospital, ALS.

The roadway was closed while police conducted an investigation, and while a wrecker responded. Frontier and Eversource were also notified due to damage to a utility pole.

Sandy Hook returned to service at 13:21. Westbound traffic was allowed through the area at that time. The roadway reopened fully at 13:40, once police and Eversource crews were done with their work.
