Car vs Tractor-Trailer

Sandy Hook VFR, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic and Newtown Police were dispatched at 18:08 to the area of Berkshire Road (Route 34) between its intersections with Sherman Street and Zoar Road for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries. 

First responders were told that a car and tractor-trailer truck had collided.

Firefighter Pete Barresi was first on the scene, and reported the scene was as described. An 18-wheeler that had been traveling east and a compact car, a Toyota Yaris, traveling west had collided. 

Second Assistant Chief Ryan Clark arrived shortly after and assumed command of the scene. 2nd AC Clark advised dispatch that the passenger of the Toyota needed extrication. The driver of the car was able to self-extricate, as was the driver of the 18-wheeler.

Engines 441 and 442 and Rescue 444 all responded with crews. 

Firefighters extricated the passenger, and assisted NVAC with medical care. The passenger was transported ALS. 

Firefighters used Hurst tools, spreaders, hand tools, cutters, cribbing, rams, and Speedi-Dri. Firefighters also diverted traffic around the scene. 

Sandy Hook remained on the scene until the vehicles were towed by wreckers from Hilario's. 

The road reopened and the company returned to service at 19:54.
