Minor Injuries Follow Tractor-Trailer Rollover (Tuesday, April 7, 2026)

Sandy Hook VFR, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and CT State Police were dispatched at 0509 Tuesday, April 7 to I-84 West between Exits 13 and 11 for a reported tractor-trailer rollover with possible injury.

CT State Police troopers alerted Sandy Hook that a saddle tank on the tractor trailer was punctured.

SHVFR First Assistant Chief Andy Ryan assumed command of the scene upon his arrival. He confirmed a tractor-trailer was on its side in the median and high speed lane. The driver was out of the vehicle.

Engine 441 and Rescue 444 responded with crews.

CT DEEP also responded due to fluids, and Modzelewski’s responded for the tow.

According to the CSP report, the driver of 2020 International fell asleep at the wheel. His truck veered to the left, struck the median guide rail and then rolled onto its driver’s side.

A 2026 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that had been traveling in the center lane behind the International was unable to avoid a collision with the out-of-control truck. The Peterbilt subsequently collided into the front portion of the International. The driver of the Peterbilt was uninjured.

Sandy Hook called for DEEP, covered the diesel spill with Speedy-Dri monitored it until the vehicle could be up-righted. Firefighters also cleared debris from the roadway and provided blocking until the scene was turned over.

Newtown Ambulance transported the International driver BLS.

The crash created heavy delays during the morning rush. Very slow traffic was recorded for nearly 7 miles behind the crash, back to Exit 15 in Southbury.

Sandy Hook turned the scene over to turned the scene over to CSP, DEEP, Modzelewski’s, and CT DOT CSP and cleared at 0745. The high speed and travel lanes of the highway remained closed for another hour for clean-up before the roadway was fully reopened around 0845.
